Soon after Fort Douglas was established, it became the home of a newspaper, the Vedette, edited by one of the Fort's officers, Captain Hempstead, the post adjutant under Colonel Connor. Originally this was intended to provide a "gentile" option to the Mormon church controlled Deseret News Newspaper (which did not like the Army's presence.)
Today, the Vedette honors the historic name of its forbear, but the content is strictly related to the history of Fort Douglas and other Utah military history topics.
